Hakone autumn leaves 2026

Hakone turns from the top down: Owakudani first, the lake next, the valley last. Here is this year's timing and which tour puts you in the right place.

Autumn in Hakone runs for about six weeks, and the colour moves downhill the whole time. The ropeway over Owakudani turns first, Lake Ashi follows, and the gardens around Gora and Hakone-Yumoto finish the season in early December.

Another warm autumn is pushing things a little late this year. Here is where the forecasts stand, which tours pass which spots, and when to expect the first snow on Fuji.

The quick answer

For a day tour from Tokyo, aim for roughly 5 to 25 November. Owakudani and the ropeway usually peak from late October to mid November, Lake Ashi in mid to late November, and Gora and Hakone-Yumoto from late November into early December. Weathernews puts most Hakone spots at their best around 12 to 22 November. Go on a weekday if you can: November weekends jam the roads. Every tour on this site visits Owakudani or the lake.

When is the best time to see autumn leaves in Hakone in 2026?

Mid November is the sweet spot for a day trip: the ropeway line is still bright and Lake Ashi is coming into peak. Most forecasts put Hakone's best colour between about 12 and 22 November.

Forecasters agree this is a slightly late year. Weathernews' first forecast of the season, on 3 September, said peaks would come later than average across much of Japan because of the long heat (Travel Voice), and the Japan Weather Association's October update said much the same for eastern Japan.

Spot by spot, the tenki.jp foliage page for Kanagawa showed the garden of the Odakyu Yama no Hotel on Lake Ashi just starting to turn this week, while the Hakone Museum of Art in Gora was still green with a forecast peak of late November to early December, and Hakone Gora Park was forecast for early December. These pages update a few times a week, so check them before you pick a date.

Where do the autumn colours peak first in Hakone?

At the top. Owakudani and the slopes under the Hakone Ropeway turn first, then the colour slides down to Lake Ashi and finally to Yumoto in the valley.

The ropeway is the best seat for it. The gondolas cross from Sounzan over the steaming Owakudani valley and down to Togendai on Lake Ashi, so in one ride you pass from bare rock and sulphur vents into maple and beech forest. In late October the upper slopes are already orange; by mid November the colour has reached the lake and the hills behind the pirate-ship piers.

Lake Ashi itself is about the views across the water: red maples on the shore, the torii of Hakone Shrine, and on a clear day Fuji's snow cap above the far ridge. Yumoto, down at the start of the Hakone Tozan line, turns last. No group tour stops there, which matters if your trip is in December.

Which Fuji and Hakone tours pass the autumn colour spots?

All of them reach Owakudani, the ropeway or Lake Ashi. The longest time in the colour goes to the small-group Hakone day: about 80 minutes at Lake Ashi plus 50 at Owakudani.

The minutes below come from each listing's itinerary. Most big tours spend the morning at Fuji and give Hakone the afternoon, which in November means lower light by 3 p.m. The small-group Hakone day is the exception: Hakone Shrine for 50 minutes, Lake Ashi with the cruise for 80, Togendai and Owakudani for 50, then Peace Park in Gotemba for a look back at Fuji.

If you want maples and Fuji in one frame, the Fuji lakes are the other option. The private tour's lakes route covers Kawaguchiko, Chureito Pagoda and Oshino Hakkai, and the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi is one of the classic autumn spots for Fuji. Our Hakone vs Kawaguchiko guide compares the two areas.

How bad is Hakone traffic on autumn weekends?

Bad. November weekends and holidays are among Hakone's worst days of the year for traffic, and tour buses sit in the same queues as everyone else.

The expressway from Tokyo takes 1.5 to 2 hours on a clear run. Add foliage weekends and the mountain roads around Lake Ashi and Owakudani crawl, especially in the afternoon when everyone heads back. The operators know it, and their listings say so. Japan Panoramic Tours' bus version ends at Odawara on weekends and holidays instead of driving back into Tokyo. Gogoday warns that weekend and holiday returns on its budget tour can run past 8 p.m. Japan Panoramic Tours also runs weekend and holiday departures from Shinjuku only, at 7:30.

Two fixes. Go on a weekday, ideally Tuesday to Thursday. If it has to be a weekend, book a tour with the Shinkansen back from Odawara, such as the bullet train tour: the train takes 30 to 45 minutes to Tokyo whatever the expressway is doing. Our bullet train vs bus guide runs the numbers.

When will Mt Fuji get its first snow cap this year?

On average the first snow cap appears around 2 October, but recent years have been late: 23 October in 2025 and 7 November in 2024, the latest on record. This year there may be no official date at all.

The Kofu Local Meteorological Observatory had announced Fuji's first snow cap by eye since 1894. Its own record sheet, published in September, says staff visual observation ended with the 2025 season (JMA Kofu, first snow cap records). The agency now tracks snow cover with radar, AMeDAS weather stations and satellites. Fujiyoshida City, at the foot of the mountain, still makes its own visual first snow make-up declaration.

When we checked in mid October, no first snow cap had been declared yet. For your trip it matters less than it sounds: a dusting can come and go in a day, and the cap usually holds from mid November onward. A mid to late November tour gives you the best chance of red maples in front and a white Fuji behind.

What should I book for Hakone in November?

For the colour, a Hakone-heavy day. For Fuji plus Hakone, the bullet train tour, on a weekday.

The small-group Hakone day at $83 is our pick for leaves: the most time at Lake Ashi and Owakudani, cruise and ropeway tickets included, and a 49-seat cap. It skips the 5th Station, which in November you may not miss. If Fuji close up matters too, the bullet train tour still reaches the 5th Station in November in normal conditions and saves you the jam on the way home.

Book early for weekend dates in mid November. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before means you can hold a date and move it if the forecast turns grey. Fare changes since last autumn are in our post on the new Hakone fares.

Frequently asked questions

When is peak autumn foliage in Hakone in 2026?

Most Hakone spots are forecast to peak between about 12 and 22 November. Owakudani turns earlier, from late October, and Gora and Hakone-Yumoto later, into early December.

Is early November too early for Hakone autumn leaves?

No. Early November is good for the ropeway line and Owakudani. Lake Ashi will be part green, and Yumoto still green.

Can you see autumn leaves and Mt Fuji on the same day tour?

Yes. Most Fuji and Hakone tours combine both, and from mid November Fuji usually has its snow cap. Seeing Fuji still depends on the clouds on the day.

Do Hakone day tours run slower on November weekends?

Yes. Expect traffic on the mountain roads and the expressway back. Some bus tours end at Odawara on weekends, so a weekday or a tour with the Shinkansen return is safer.
