Mt Fuji & Hakone tour prices

A Fuji and Hakone day from Tokyo costs anything from $78 to $161 a head on a coach, or $314 to $507 for a whole private car. Here is what each price buys, what it quietly leaves out, and what the same day costs on your own.

Booking choice: The Fuji and Hakone bullet train tour, from $159 per person. Check dates Tour details

Nine tours run the Fuji and Hakone day from Tokyo on this site. They look alike in the photos: a coach, the mountain, a pirate ship on a lake. The prices don't. The gap comes from four things: whether the 5th Station is on the route, whether the ropeway and cruise tickets are in the price, how you get back to Tokyo, and whether lunch is included.

The dollar prices below are the Viator from-prices for 2026; they move a little with the date and the option you pick. The yen fares come from the operators: Hakone Ropeway, the Lake Ashi cruise, Odakyu's Hakone Freepass and the Shinkansen from Odawara.

The quick answer

Group tours cost $78 to $161 per person. The $159 bullet train tour includes the 5th Station, the ropeway, the Lake Ashi cruise and the Shinkansen back; the $78 budget tour skips the 5th Station and leaves out the cruise and lunch. Private cars cost $314 to $507 per group, with tickets extra. Doing Hakone yourself costs 7,100 yen on the Freepass, and Fuji plus Hakone in one day is hard by public transport.

How much is a Mt Fuji and Hakone day tour in 2026?

From $78 per person on the budget coach to $161 on JTB's day with lunch and the bullet train. Private cars run $314 to $507 per group.

Every tour on the site, cheapest first. Read the Fuji column before the price: three of the cheaper days never go up to the 5th Station.

What does the tour price include?

On most group tours: the coach, an English-speaking guide, the Hakone Ropeway and the Lake Ashi cruise. Lunch is usually an option you pay for, and the Shinkansen only comes with the bullet train versions.

  • Always: the coach from a fixed meeting point in Shinjuku, Ginza or by Tokyo Station, and a guide. Japan Panoramic Tours adds Wi-Fi on board and an audio guide in seven languages.
  • Usually: the ropeway and the cruise. Japan Panoramic Tours, JTB, the hotel pickup tour, the train-or-bus day and Local Guide Stars all include both.
  • Only on bullet train options: the Shinkansen ticket from Odawara to Tokyo Station.
  • Only if you pick it: lunch. Every big operator sells a with-lunch and a no-lunch version of the same day.
  • Never: hotel drop-off on the group tours, drinks, snacks and souvenirs. Owakudani's black eggs are an extra few hundred yen.

One guest on the flagship found the day too full, not too thin: “When we went to Hakone, we should have either done the cable car or the pirate cruise ship. Doing both is way too much.” The bundle is the point of the price, though. Bought separately, the two tickets cost 3,700 yen.

The Hakone Ropeway is 2,000 yen one way since October 2025. Most tours include it.

What do the cheapest Mt Fuji tours leave out?

The $78 budget tour drops the 5th Station, the Lake Ashi cruise and lunch. The $83 Hakone day drops the 5th Station but keeps both tickets.

Gogoday Travel's budget tour is the lowest price on the site, and the listing is straight about why. The cruise (the Hakone Pirate Ship) and lunch are both excluded. Your Fuji time is a 15-minute stop at Lake Yamanaka and 40 minutes at Oshino Hakkai, seen from below. If the ropeway is suspended for wind or volcanic gas, they refund 1,000 yen per person by email. Add the cruise yourself at Togendai and the real price is $78 plus 1,700 yen.

Local Guide Stars' $83 day is the better cheap deal for most people, provided you don't care about the 5th Station. Cruise and ropeway are included, Lake Ashi gets 80 minutes, and the Fuji stop is 30 minutes at a peace park in Gotemba. One guest wrote: “Even if Mt. Fuji hides behind clouds and mist, the scenery is stunning.”

Gogoday also warns that weekend traffic can push the return past 8 p.m. Don't book a dinner reservation on the same evening.

How much does a private Mt Fuji tour cost per person?

The $507 private car works out at about $254 each for two, $127 for four and $101 for five, before tickets and the 2,800 yen Fuji toll. Xplor Japan's $314 car is $157 each for two.

Both private tours price the vehicle, not the seat. That flips the maths for families and small groups:

PeoplePrivate Fuji or Hakone ($507)Private, Shinkansen back ($314)Bullet train group tour ($159 pp)
2$253.50 each$157 each$159 each
4$126.75 each$78.50 each$159 each
5$101.40 each$62.80 each$159 each

What the private prices don't include: the ropeway and cruise (3,700 yen a head if you do both), lunch, and on the $507 tour a 2,800 yen Fuji toll per group plus 5,000 yen for every hour past ten. Xplor Japan's tour includes fuel, parking and a reserved Shinkansen seat, but leaves you at Tokyo Station. The full comparison is in private or group tour.

The private price is per vehicle. Four people in the van pay less each than on the coach.

Is it cheaper to do Mt Fuji and Hakone on your own?

For Hakone alone, yes: the 2-day Hakone Freepass from Shinjuku is 7,100 yen and covers the ropeway and cruise. Fuji and Hakone in one day by public transport is a different story.

Official 2026 fares for the pieces a tour bundles:

ItemFare (adult)Source
Hakone Freepass, 2 days from Shinjuku7,100 yenOdakyu
Hakone Ropeway, one way2,000 yen (3,000 return)Hakone Navi
Lake Ashi cruise, one way1,700 yenjapan-guide
Shinkansen Odawara to Tokyo, unreservedabout 3,370 yenEkitan
Romancecar Odawara to Shinjuku1,910 yen (910 yen without the express seat)Ekitan
Highway bus Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko2,200 yen one wayjapan-guide
Bus Kawaguchiko to the 5th Station2,000 yen one way, 3,400 return (climbing season)japan-guide

A DIY Hakone loop on the Freepass costs 7,100 yen, plus the Romancecar seat if you want it. A DIY 5th Station day via Kawaguchiko is about 7,800 yen in season (two highway bus legs and the return bus up the mountain). That is cheaper than any tour.

The catch: the 5th Station and Hakone sit on opposite sides of Fuji, and the public link runs through Gotemba with a change of bus. Nobody does both well in one day by bus and train. That join is what you pay a tour for.

Is lunch included on Mt Fuji tours, and what are the options?

Only if you book the with-lunch option. Japan Panoramic Tours serves a buffet, JTB a hotel lunch with a taiko drum show, and the budget tours leave you to buy your own.

  • Japan Panoramic Tours (bullet train and bus versions): a buffet with nutrition labels. The listing says halal-certified food is not available, though non-pork options are; gluten-free choices may be limited. With a strict diet, book without lunch and bring your own.
  • JTB (drum show tour): 60 minutes at the Fuji Zakura Hotel with a taiko performance. One guest who brought food on the no-lunch option complained of waiting on the bus for an hour.
  • Hotel pickup tour: lunch in Gotemba on the with-lunch option. The operator can't do special meals.
  • Budget and small operators: no lunch in the price. Guests on the Gogoday day report an add-on lunch, with a vegan choice.
  • Private tours: lunch is never included. Drivers pick the place, and guests mention good tips.

Carry some cash. Gogoday's listing warns that some spots around Fuji don't take cards.

Add the buffet lunch when you book, or skip it and bring your own: the price drops either way.

How much do children pay on a Mt Fuji day tour?

It depends on the operator. Japan Panoramic Tours has a child band for ages 4 to 11 and JTB for 6 to 11; Gogoday charges the adult price from age 4, and the private tours price the car.

Straight from the booking pages:

TourChild bandInfants
Japan Panoramic Tours (both versions)4 to 110 to 3, on a lap
JTB Sunrise Tours6 to 110 to 5, on a lap
Hotel pickup tour6 to 110 to 5, on a lap

Gogoday budget tourNone: adult price from 40 to 3, on a lap
Local Guide StarsNone: one price for all agesLap seat
Private Fuji or HakonePer carInfant seats available

The child rate shows once you enter ages at checkout. On the private car, a child costs nothing extra, which is why families of four or more often end up there. On the official side, the ropeway charges children 700 yen one way, and children under 6 ride the cruise free with an adult.

Are there hidden extras: tolls, overtime, tips?

Tips aren't expected. The real extras are the 2,800 yen Fuji toll and 5,000 yen overtime on the private car, the cruise on the budget tour, and a train home if your bus ends at Odawara.

  • Tips: listed as “Gratuity (not obligatory)” by Japan Panoramic Tours. Nobody will hold out a hand.
  • Fuji toll: the Subaru Line charges 2,800 yen per vehicle, according to japan-guide. Coach tours absorb it; the $507 private car passes it on per group.
  • Overtime: 5,000 yen per extra hour after 10 hours hotel to hotel on the private Fuji or Hakone tour. A holiday jam can cost you an hour.
  • The weekend Odawara drop: the bus version ends at Odawara on weekends and public holidays. Getting back to Shinjuku costs 910 yen on a local Odakyu train or 1,910 yen on the Romancecar. Details in bullet train or bus.
  • Late arrival: no refund on any group tour if you miss the departure. Local Guide Stars leaves at 8:00 sharp.

And one non-extra: if cloud hides Fuji, nobody refunds anything. Read the odds by month before you pick a date.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Mt Fuji day trip from Tokyo?

Group tours cost $78 to $161 per person in 2026. The most-booked one, with the 5th Station, the ropeway, the Lake Ashi cruise and the bullet train back, is $159.

Is the Hakone Freepass worth it for a day trip?

For Hakone on your own, yes. At 7,100 yen from Shinjuku it covers the train there and back, the ropeway (2,000 yen) and the cruise (1,700 yen). It doesn't reach Kawaguchiko or the 5th Station.

Do I need to tip the guide on a Mt Fuji tour?

No. Tipping isn't part of Japanese custom and the listings call it not obligatory. A thank-you and a review are welcome.

Why is the bullet train tour more expensive than the bus tour?

The $26 difference on Japan Panoramic Tours pays for the Shinkansen ticket from Odawara to Tokyo, worth about 3,370 yen unreserved. It also gets you home on weekends, when the bus version stops at Odawara.
